In Detail
País is a historic red grape variety, brought to the Americas by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. It represents one of Chile's oldest Vitis vinifera varieties. País thrives in Chile's cooler, coastal and lower-altitude vineyards, especially in Itata, Maule, and Bío-Bío, as well as in older plantings within the Central Valley. Wines made from País are typically light-bodied, possessing thin skins, moderate acidity, and low to moderate tannins, resulting in fresh and approachable styles. The aromatic profile is characterized by bright red fruits such as strawberry and cranberry, alongside floral and herbaceous hints, often with earthy undertones. Modern winemaking techniques are increasingly used to enhance perfume and saline minerality, particularly from old-vine sites. País is versatile, suitable for simple red table wines, vibrant rosés, and increasingly, low-intervention, single-vineyard bottlings. Ideal food pairings include seafood, grilled shellfish, roasted chicken, empanadas, charcuterie, and light tomato-based dishes, complementing its refreshing character and delicate tannins.
