In Detail
Vidiano is an indigenous Greek white grape variety primarily cultivated on the island of Crete. Rediscovered and revitalized in the late 20th century, Vidiano thrives in the warm, sun-drenched vineyards of central and northern Crete, particularly in the Heraklion region and PDO zones like Peza and Archanes. The grape favors calcareous, well-drained soils. Vidiano wines typically exhibit a medium to full body, a rounded texture, and moderate to high acidity. The aromatic profile often includes notes of white peach, apricot, citrus zest, orange blossom, and honeyed pear, sometimes accompanied by subtle herbal and mineral nuances, especially in wines from poorer soils or coastal areas. Styles range from fresh, unoaked expressions to richer, barrel-fermented versions that develop creaminess and spice. Vidiano pairs well with grilled fish, seafood, roasted poultry, creamy cheeses, and Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs, lemon, or light sauces, complementing the grape's fruit and acidity.
