Vranec (also known as Vranac) is a robust, dark-skinned grape variety indigenous to the Western Balkans, with its historical heartland in Montenegro and significant modern production in North Macedonia. The variety thrives in warm, continental climates with Mediterranean influences, favoring well-drained soils to manage its natural vigor. Vranec is celebrated for producing deeply pigmented, full-bodied wines characterized by a powerful tannic structure and vibrant acidity. The aromatic profile is dominated by intense black and blue fruits, such as blackberry, black cherry, and wild plum, often accompanied by floral hints of violet and spicy undertones of black pepper or liquorice. With barrel maturation, these wines develop complex notes of cedar, chocolate, and vanilla, which help to soften the firm tannins. Vranec is versatile, ranging from fresh, fruit-forward styles to concentrated, age-worthy reserves. Ideal food pairings include grilled red meats, roasted lamb, hearty Balkan stews, aged hard cheeses like Pecorino, and rich tomato-based dishes or smoked charcuterie.
