California

Region Insight

California is the United States' most prolific and diverse wine region, stretching from cool coastal districts to warm inland valleys. Its modern industry grew rapidly after Prohibition, propelled by innovation, planting of European varieties and international recognition following the 1976 Judgment of Paris. The state produces a wide spectrum of styles: powerful, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon and rich, often oak-aged Chardonnay from Napa and Sonoma; fruit-forward Zinfandel from old-vine vineyards in the Sierra foothills and Dry Creek; and elegant Pinot Noir and sparkling wines from cooler coastal AVAs. Winemakers balance Old World techniques with New World fruit expression, making California synonymous with both commercial scale and boutique quality.

Climate & Terroir

California's climate ranges from Mediterranean coastal fog to hot inland valley heat, creating diverse microclimates. Soils vary widely—alluvial fans, volcanic basalt, marine sediments and clay—on plains, rolling hills and mountain slopes. Coastal influence and diurnal temperature shifts are critical for acid retention in cooler AVAs, while inland sites yield riper fruit and higher alcohol potential.
