Carso

Region Insight

The Carso (Carso/Kras) is a compact, distinctive wine area on the karst plateau south of Trieste on the Italian-Slovenian border. Viticulture here has deep Slovenian and Italian roots; small family estates and cooperative cellars predominate. Wines are defined by a stony, mineral character and marked acidity: whites—above all Vitovska—are crisp, saline and herbaceous, while local reds such as Terrano deliver bright acidity, red-fruit and iron-like tannins. Low yields, old bush-trained vines and a focus on terroir-driven, food-friendly wines give Carso a strong regional identity within Friuli-Venezia Giulia and growing interest among specialist importers and sommeliers.

Climate & Terroir

Carso sits on a rugged karst plateau of limestone and rocky scree with pockets of terra rossa. Soils are shallow, stony and well-drained, producing low-vigor vines. Influence from the nearby Adriatic moderates temperatures, while the bora wind increases diurnal range and dries the canopy. Vineyards occupy plateaus and steep slopes, emphasizing minerality, saline notes and firm natural acidity in the wines.

Signature Styles

  • Dry mineral whites (Vitovska-led)
  • Fresh aromatic whites (Malvasia Istriana, Sauvignon)
  • Earthy, high-acid reds (Terrano/Refosco)
