Eger

Region Insight

Eger is a historic wine region in northern Hungary, sitting on the northern slopes between the Bükk and Mátra mountain ranges. Best known for the traditional blended red Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood), the region combines centuries-old winemaking with modern revitalization—newer projects emphasize freshness and typicity. Vineyard sites range from cool, higher-altitude slopes to warmer valley parcels, producing structured, medium-bodied reds and increasingly crisp, aromatic whites such as the local Egri Csillag cuvées. The region's reputation rests on its relatively cool continental climate, good diurnal range and a long history of both indigenous and international varieties, offering wines with balanced acidity, spice and mineral notes.

Climate & Terroir

Eger has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, benefiting from cooling influences and strong diurnal temperature shifts. Vineyards occupy gentle to steep slopes and valley sites. Soils are varied across the district, commonly loess and clay with patches of volcanic or igneous-origin rock on certain hills, giving wines a mix of freshness, structure and mineral character.

Signature Styles

  • Egri Bikavér (traditional blended red)
  • Fresh, dry whites (Egri Csillag blends)
