Goriska Brda

Region Insight

Goriška Brda, often simply Brda, is a compact, high-quality wine district in western Slovenia along the Italian border, contiguous with Italy’s Collio. Centuries of mixed Slavic and Italian viticultural tradition yield a modern focus on terroir-driven, varietal expressions. Small, family-run estates dominate, producing crisp, mineral whites, textured orange wines and refined, food-friendly reds. Winemakers emphasize low yields, careful vineyard work on steep terraces and both indigenous and international varieties. The region’s wines are prized for vibrant acidity, clear fruit and a stony, savory finish that reflects Brda’s mosaic of exposures and microplots, making it a notable bridge between Slovenian and Friulian styles.

Climate & Terroir

Brda has a sub-Mediterranean climate moderated by the nearby Adriatic and influenced by Alpine air, giving warm summers and cooling diurnal shifts. Vineyards sit on steep, terraced hills with varied soils—flysch, marl, sandstone and clay—yielding good drainage and stony minerality. Diverse aspects and small plots create marked microclimates; slope position and exposure strongly shape ripeness and style.

Signature Styles

  • Dry, mineral-driven whites (Rebula/Ribolla)
  • Skin-contact/orange wines from white varieties
  • Elegant, medium-bodied reds (Merlot, Pinot Noir)
