Lombardia

Region Insight

Lombardia (Lombardy) in northern Italy is a diverse and historic wine region stretching from the Alps to the Po Valley and the shores of Lake Garda. Its wine map includes high‑altitude Valtellina, the sparkling house of Franciacorta, the Pinot‑focused Oltrepò Pavese and the fragrant whites of Lugana. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times, but the region is best known today for elegant Metodo Classico sparkling wines from Franciacorta, refined Nebbiolo reds from terraced Valtellina vineyards and versatile still and sparkling Pinot Noir/Chardonnay elsewhere. Small family estates, steep terraces and modern cellars coexist, producing wines that balance Alpine freshness, structure and regional tradition.

Climate & Terroir

Lombardy shows strong contrasts: alpine and subalpine climates in Valtellina, continental plains and lake‑moderated zones near Garda and Iseo. Soils range from glacial moraines and mixed gravel/clay in Franciacorta to steep, schistose and mica‑rich terraces in Valtellina and fertile alluvium on the plains. Altitude, slope aspect and lake influence are key, giving cool nights, good diurnal range and ripening balance.

Signature Styles

  • Metodo Classico sparkling (Franciacorta)
  • Nebbiolo-based elegant reds (Valtellina)
  • Pinot Noir and Chardonnay still and sparkling wines (Oltrepò Pavese/Lombardy)
