Maipo Valley

Region Insight

Maipo Valley, just south-east of Santiago, is one of Chile’s historic and most influential wine regions, famed since colonial times and revitalized by modern winemaking. Nestled along the Maipo River with vineyards stretching from river plains to Andes foothills, the region is particularly celebrated for concentrated, age-worthy red wines. Producers balance traditions of structured Cabernet-based wines with newer plantings and techniques producing vibrant Carmenère, Syrah and Merlot. Subzones such as Alto Maipo deliver cooler, mineral-driven expressions while lower terraces yield riper, fruit-forward styles. Maipo’s proximity to the capital and long viticultural history make it a benchmark for Chilean red wines on the world stage.

Climate & Terroir

Maipo has a Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters with irrigation fed by Andean snowmelt. Soils range from alluvial sands and gravels on the lower terraces to clay and decomposed granite in the foothills. Elevation and proximity to the Andes create cooler nights and better diurnal range in Alto Maipo, producing firmer tannins and mineral complexity, while lower valley sites give riper, more opulent fruit.

Signature Styles

  • Structured, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Bordeaux-style Cabernet blends
