Maremma Toscana

Region Insight

Maremma Toscana, in southern coastal Tuscany around Grosseto, is a dynamic and scenic wine region where savory Mediterranean character meets modern winemaking. Once malarial marshland, the area was reclaimed and replanting from the late 19th and 20th centuries led to a rapid revival, with a big push from the 1970s onward. Producers blend indigenous tradition and international ambition: elegant Sangiovese and Vermentino sit alongside Cabernet and Merlot-based blends. Wines run from fresh, aromatic whites and rosés to ripe, structured reds and age-worthy single-vineyard bottlings. The region’s relaxed style, saline notes from sea breezes and clear, fruit-driven profiles have made Maremma a notable and increasingly influential part of Tuscany’s wine map.

Climate & Terroir

Maremma has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers tempered by cooling sea breezes. Vineyards range from coastal plains to rolling hills and higher inland sites. Soils are varied — alluvial sands and gravels near the coast, with clay, limestone and stonier hill soils inland — which gives producers choices for both aromatic whites and structured reds. Proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea provides moderating maritime influence and often a saline lift in the wines.

Signature Styles

  • Mediterranean Sangiovese-driven reds
