Nova Scotia

Region Insight

Nova Scotia, Canada’s smallest but rapidly evolving wine region, sits along the Atlantic and Bay of Fundy coasts. Its maritime influence produces cool-climate wines marked by brisk acidity and pronounced aromatic clarity. The modern industry grew from experimental plantings in the 1970s to a vibrant scene of small, quality-focused wineries and growers’ co‑operatives. Nova Scotia has become noted for lively aromatic whites and refined méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines, often made from hybrid and classic Vitis vinifera varieties adapted to the local climate. The provincial Tidal Bay appellation highlights crisp, terroir-driven white blends that express saline minerality and ocean-breezed freshness.

Climate & Terroir

Nova Scotia is profoundly maritime, with cooling ocean breezes, fog and a relatively short, cool growing season. Vineyards cluster on sheltered, south- or southeast-facing slopes near tidal waterways. Soils are commonly glacial tills with pockets of sandstone and shale; drainage and slope aspect are crucial. The Bay of Fundy’s tidal influence moderates temperatures and can lend a saline character to wines.

Signature Styles
