Port

Region Insight

Port wine originates in the rugged, mountainous Douro Valley of Northern Portugal, one of the world's first officially demarcated wine regions (1756). This iconic fortified wine is produced by adding grape spirit (aguardente) during fermentation, resulting in a sweet, high-alcohol beverage. The vineyards are dramatically terraced along the steep banks of the Douro River, primarily planted on schistous soils. Port is renowned globally for its complexity and longevity, offering diverse styles from youthful Ruby and wood-aged Tawny to the pinnacle of quality, Vintage Port, which requires decades of bottle aging.

Climate & Terroir

The Douro Valley experiences a hot, dry continental climate, shielded from Atlantic influence by the Marão mountains. The defining feature is the steep, terraced landscape carved into the schist bedrock. These slate-like soils retain heat and force the vines to root deeply, contributing intense concentration and minerality to the grapes.
