Thracian Lowlands

Region Insight

The Thracian Lowlands (Thracian Valley) is Bulgaria’s largest and warmest wine region, centred on the Maritsa River around Plovdiv and extending across Pazardzhik, Haskovo and Stara Zagora provinces. Long cultivated since antiquity, the area expanded with plantings of international varieties during the 20th century while preserving local cultivars. Vineyards on fertile plains and gentle foothills produce high-yielding grapes that suit both volume production and increasingly quality-focused estates. Today the region is known for ripe, sun-driven reds, approachable rosés and modern dry whites, with a mix of family-run wineries and larger enterprises investing in modernization and vineyard management.

Climate & Terroir

The Thracian Lowlands feature a warm continental climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters, high heat accumulation and relatively low rainfall. Vineyards sit mainly on low-lying plains and gentle slopes along the Maritsa, with alluvial, loess and sandy-clay soils. The flat terrain allows early ripening and consistent yields; irrigation is used in drier sites and cooler foothills can provide diurnal range for white varieties.
