Delaware

Grape Profile

Delaware is a versatile hybrid grape celebrated for its high acidity, light body, and delicate aromatic profile. While the berries possess a characteristic pink hue, they are most frequently used to produce fresh white wines, sparkling wines, and occasionally light rosés. The sensory experience is defined by notes of strawberry, green apple, and honeysuckle, often featuring a mild labrusca-derived musk that adds unique character without being overpowering. It is a cornerstone of viticulture in the northeastern United States, particularly New York and Pennsylvania, as well as Ontario and Japan's Yamanashi region. These wines are best enjoyed young to appreciate their vibrant fruitiness and crisp finish. Delaware serves as an excellent companion to light fare, including sushi, shellfish, and creamy cheeses.

In Detail

Delaware is a historic American grape variety, first identified in Ohio during the mid-19th century. Although its exact parentage remains a subject of debate, it is widely considered a natural hybrid involving Vitis labrusca, Vitis vinifera, and potentially Vitis aestivalis. This variety gained significant popularity across the northeastern United States, Canada, and notably Japan. Despite its pinkish-red skins, Delaware is predominantly vinified as a white wine. The grape thrives in cool to moderate climates, with key plantings in New York’s Finger Lakes, Pennsylvania, Ontario, and the Yamanashi Prefecture. Structurally, Delaware wines are light- to medium-bodied, characterized by high, refreshing acidity and negligible tannins. The aromatic profile is distinctive, offering notes of wild strawberry, red apple, and white flowers, often accompanied by a subtle, non-aggressive 'foxiness' or musk. Styles vary from crisp dry and off-dry still wines to sparkling versions and even sweet dessert wines. It pairs exceptionally well with delicate dishes like sushi, shellfish, fresh summer salads, and soft goat cheeses.
