In Detail
Frontenac Gris is a white-berried mutation of the cold-hardy hybrid grape Frontenac, created by the University of Minnesota for harsh continental climates. As an interspecific Vitis hybrid, it exhibits exceptional winter hardiness and disease resistance, yielding lighter-colored juice compared to its red-skinned parent. The vine displays moderate to high vigor, buds late, and ripens mid-to-late season, making it suitable for northern vineyards with short growing seasons. Structurally, wines exhibit bright, high acidity, moderate alcohol, and minimal tannin, lending versatility in winemaking. The aromatic profile commonly features stone fruits (peach, apricot), citrus, green apple, with floral and honeyed nuances, and occasionally tropical hints when fully ripe. Winemakers produce dry to off-dry still wines, sparkling wines, and richer barrel-fermented whites. Ideal food pairings include spicy Asian cuisine, grilled pork, shellfish, fresh goat cheese, salads with vinaigrette, and fruit-based desserts, where the acidity balances richness and sweetness.
