Mtsvane

Grape Profile

Mtsvane is a highly aromatic Georgian white grape known for its bright acidity, low tannins, and medium body. It yields wines with pronounced floral notes, complemented by apple, quince, and citrus aromas, often with a subtle herbal or tea-like complexity. Winemaking techniques vary, with stainless steel fermentation producing crisp, dry whites and qvevri fermentation resulting in textured, skin-contact orange wines. Key regions for Mtsvane cultivation include Kakheti (especially Kvareli and Telavi) and Kartli, with smaller plantings in Imereti. Mtsvane's defining characteristics are its aromatic lift and perfume, making it a versatile choice for food pairings and traditional Georgian dishes.

In Detail

Mtsvane is a distinguished Georgian white grape variety, its name translating to “green” or “young.” Predominantly cultivated in eastern Georgia, particularly in Kakheti (notably around Kvareli and Telavi), Mtsvane also has a presence in Kartli, Imereti, and Racha-Lechkhumi. The vines yield small to medium-sized berries with relatively thin skins and moderate productivity. Often blended with Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane also shines as a single-varietal wine. Structurally, Mtsvane contributes medium-bodied wines characterized by vibrant acidity and low phenolic tannins, lending itself well to both stainless steel and traditional qvevri (clay amphora) fermentation. Aromatic profiles are intensely floral and perfumed, exhibiting notes of jasmine and honeysuckle alongside green apple, quince, citrus peel, and subtle herbal or tea-like nuances. Styles range from crisp, dry whites and intensely aromatic orange/qvevri wines to off-dry and sparkling expressions. Ideal food pairings include seafood, smoked fish, light poultry dishes, herb-infused Caucasian cuisine, and fresh cheeses.
