In Detail
Nero di Troia is a red grape variety primarily found in Puglia, southeastern Italy. Its origins are debated, with some believing it was brought by the Greeks. The grape flourishes in the warm, dry climate and calcareous soils of the region. Nero di Troia (also known as Uva di Troia) produces wines with deep color, firm tannins, and good acidity. These wines often exhibit flavors of black cherry, plum, and spice, with hints of leather and tobacco as they age. It is used both as a varietal wine and in blends, particularly in the Castel del Monte DOC. Nero di Troia wines can range from rustic and earthy to more refined and elegant, depending on winemaking techniques. They pair well with grilled meats, hearty pasta dishes, aged cheeses, and other robust Mediterranean cuisine. The grape's structure allows for aging, developing complexity over time.
