In Detail
Nosiola is an indigenous white grape variety originating from the Trentino region of northern Italy, particularly the Valle dei Laghi near Lake Garda. Its history in the area is well-documented. The grape flourishes in calcareous, well-drained soils and benefits from cooler, alpine-influenced climates. Nosiola tends to produce moderate yields, resulting in wines characterized by finesse rather than intense power. Structurally, Nosiola wines typically exhibit a medium body, refreshing acidity, and minimal phenolic bitterness. The thin skins of the grape allow for versatility in winemaking, suitable for both fresh, dry wines and the traditional passito-style dessert wine known as Vino Santo. Aromatic profiles often feature delicate floral and stone fruit notes, such as white blossom, pear, and peach, along with distinctive hints of almond or hazelnut, complemented by herbal and mineral undertones. Winemakers craft crisp, unoaked bottlings, as well as the oxidative Vino Santo, which develops honeyed and nutty complexities with age. Ideal food pairings include light seafood dishes, grilled white fish, vegetable risottos, soft cheeses, and almond- or honey-based desserts, especially when enjoying the sweet Vino Santo.
