Refosco

Grape Profile

Refosco yields deeply colored red wines marked by high acidity, noticeable tannins, and a medium to full body. Styles range from fresh and fruity to age-worthy, oak-influenced wines that emphasize structure. The aroma profile features black cherry, plum, blackberry, herbs, and earthy/mineral notes, sometimes with a characteristic bitter almond nuance. Tannins are typically firm but can soften depending on ripeness and winemaking techniques. Key growing regions for Refosco include Friuli-Venezia Giulia (especially Colli Orientali), the Carso/Karst plateau, and Istria, spanning Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. It pairs well with grilled meats, game, polenta dishes, and aged cheeses.

In Detail

Refosco is an ancient family of red grape varieties native to northeastern Italy, with strong historical ties to Friuli and surrounding regions. The most well-known member is Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, believed to have originated in Friuli-Venezia Giulia before spreading to Veneto, Istria, and the Karst/Carso plateau. These vines yield deeply colored wines characterized by firm acidity, noticeable tannins, and a medium to full body. The aromatic profile commonly includes black cherry, plum, wild blackberry, spicy herbs, earthy minerals, and a distinctive bitter almond or olive note on the finish. Refosco wines range in style from fresh, approachable reds intended for early consumption to more structured, oak-aged bottlings and rustic, traditional expressions. Sparkling Refosco is less common. This grape's structure makes it a good match for grilled red meats, game dishes, hearty stews, aged hard cheeses, polenta with ragu, and tomato-based dishes that can complement its tannins and acidity. Cooler vintages accentuate its lively acidity, while warmer sites promote riper fruit and softer tannins.
