Zelen is a rare, indigenous white grape variety originating from the borderlands of western Slovenia, primarily found in Goriška Brda and neighboring Slovenian Istria (sometimes referred to regionally as Zeleni). With a long history of local cultivation, Zelen has persisted as a niche variety, highly valued for its fresh, varietal white wines. It thrives in warm locations with significant diurnal temperature variation and calcareous or flysch soils, yielding small to medium-sized berries and moderately low yields. The resulting wines exhibit bright, high natural acidity, moderate alcohol levels, and minimal phenolic astringency. The aromatic profile is characterized by floral and herbal nuances, including acacia blossom, citrus zest, green apple, white pepper, and a delicate almond or tonic-like bitterness on the finish. Typical styles encompass dry, crisp single-varietal wines, lighter sparkling wines, or blended whites; historically, it has also been incorporated into aromatized wines.
