Brda

Region Insight

Brda (Goriška Brda) sits on Slovenia's western edge, bordering Italy, and forms a compact, vineyard-dominated landscape of rolling, sunlit hills. The region has a long viticultural pedigree stretching back to Roman and medieval times and later shaped by Venetian and Austro-Hungarian influences. Wines are known for finesse and clear varietal expression: crisp, aromatic whites and medium-bodied, fruit-driven reds gain freshness from elevation and bora-influenced breezes. Small, family-run estates focus on site-specific bottlings and native varieties alongside international grapes, producing terroir-driven dry wines and a growing interest in natural and skin-contact styles. Brda’s proximity to Italy’s Collio creates stylistic affinities while preserving distinct Slovenian identity.

Climate & Terroir

Brda enjoys a sub-Mediterranean climate moderated by the Adriatic and cooled by bora winds and hilltop exposure. Vineyards lie on south- and southwest-facing slopes at low to moderate elevation. Soils are varied—flysch with marl, sandstone and sandstone-conglomerate mixes—providing good drainage and minerality. Terraced plots and fragmented small holdings create many meso-sites, amplifying site expression and ripening differences across the compact appellation.

Signature Styles

  • Aromatic, mineral-driven dry whites
  • Medium-bodied, elegant Merlot-based reds
  • Skin-contact/amber wines from indigenous varieties
