Central Otago

Region Insight

Central Otago, on New Zealand’s South Island, is the country’s most southerly and one of its youngest wine regions, emerging strongly for quality wine since the 1980s. The region is best known for intensely flavoured, elegant Pinot Noir that reflects clear fruit, bright acidity and often brisk minerality. Vineyards sit in sheltered glacial valleys and terraces framed by dramatic alpine scenery, producing wines with pure fruit and a sense of place. Winemaking ranges from fruit-driven, early-release styles to more structured, oak-influenced expressions and craft-focused single-vineyard bottlings that emphasise site differences across subregions such as Bannockburn and Gibbston.

Climate & Terroir

Central Otago is continental and notably cool for New Zealand, with warm sunny days, cold nights and a high diurnal range. Rainfall is relatively low and vines sit on free-draining schist-derived gravels, silt and alluvial terraces. Vineyards are often at moderate to high elevation in sheltered valleys, which concentrates fruit flavours and preserves acidity.

Signature Styles

  • Cool-climate Pinot Noir, ranging from bright and fruity to structured and ageworthy
  • Crisp, varietal-driven Pinot Gris and aromatic white wines
  • Classically restrained Chardonnay with fresh acidity and subtle oak
