Crozes-Hermitage

Region Insight

Crozes-Hermitage is the largest Northern Rhône appellation, circling the famous Hermitage hill and stretching north and west of Tain-l'Hermitage. It produces mostly Syrah-based reds that range from easy-drinking, peppery and fruity wines to more structured, oak-aged examples; small volumes of white from Marsanne and Roussanne add aromatic balance. The AOC dates from 1937 and historically supplied both local consumption and wider trade, evolving from simple, high-yield plains vineyards to more quality-focused parcels on better slopes. Producers today balance tradition and modernization, emphasizing terroir expression, careful yields and selective oak use, making Crozes-Hermitage a reliable source of classic Northern Rhône character at accessible prices.

Climate & Terroir

The climate is continental with strong Mistral winds and some Mediterranean influence, giving hot summers and cold winters. Soils vary: granite and schist on the eastern slopes near Hermitage, with sand, clay and alluvial pebbles across the plains. Many vineyards sit on gentle slopes with southern or eastern exposures, while lower-lying terraces produce more generous, early-ripening fruit. These variations create a range of styles across the appellation.

Signature Styles

  • Fresh, peppery Syrah-driven reds
  • Richer, oak-influenced Syrah reds from hillside sites
  • Aromatic, textured Marsanne/Roussanne whites
