Italy

Region Insight

Italy is one of the world’s oldest and most diverse wine nations, stretching from the Alpine north to the Mediterranean south and islands. Centuries of viticulture—from Etruscan and Roman times through medieval monasteries—have produced a vast mosaic of regional traditions, indigenous grapes and DOC/DOCG appellations. Modern quality movements and international trade revitalized many zones while preserving local typicity. Expect everything from light, crisp coastal whites and aromatic sparklings to powerful, ageworthy reds. Food-friendly wines and strong regional identities define Italian wine culture, where small family producers sit alongside large cooperative and export-driven industries.

Climate & Terroir

Italy’s climates range from cool Alpine and continental in the north to warm Mediterranean in the south and islands. Soils are extremely varied—limestone and marl in many premier crus, clay and alluvial plains, volcanic soils on Etna and parts of Sicily. Extensive coastal, hilly and high-altitude sites provide good diurnal shifts; steep slopes and terraces preserve tradition and create strong site expression across microclimates.

Signature Styles

  • Ageworthy Nebbiolo reds (Barolo, Barbaresco)
  • Sangiovese-driven Tuscan reds (Chianti, Brunello, Super Tuscans)
  • Sparkling wines (Prosecco; traditional-method Franciacorta)
  • Appassimento-style Amarone and other raisined-grape wines
