Moldova

Region Insight

Moldova is a small but historically rich wine country in Eastern Europe, nestled between Romania and Ukraine. Winemaking here dates back millennia, with archaeological evidence of viticulture and a deep rural tradition. During the Soviet era Moldova became a centre for large-scale production and fortified wine, leaving behind extensive cellars such as Mileștii Mici and Cricova. Since independence Moldova has pursued quality-driven reforms: boutique wineries, renewed focus on indigenous varieties, and improved viticultural practices. Contemporary Moldovan wines range from crisp, aromatic whites and elegant sparklings to approachable, fruit-forward reds and traditional sweet or fortified styles, all reflecting the country’s varied microregions and long cellar culture.

Climate & Terroir

Moldova has a moderate continental climate with warm, sunny summers and cold winters; maritime Black Sea influence is limited but local microclimates vary. Soils include fertile chernozems, clay, sandy loams and areas with limestone or marl; vine belts are found on gentle slopes and plateaus. Regions such as Codru benefit from forested shelter and subterranean cellars, while southern plains are warmer and suited to robust red varieties. These conditions favor both early-ripening whites and warm-climate reds.
