Northern Rhône

Region Insight

The Northern Rhône, located in southeastern France along the Rhône River from Vienne to just north of Valence, is famed for its steep, terraced vineyards and long history of fine wine production. Small appellations like Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Joseph produce intensely flavored, ageworthy red wines from Syrah, often showing pepper, black fruit and floral notes. White wines from Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne range from aromatic and textured to rich and honeyed. Vineyards are typically small, family-owned parcels on dramatic slopes; winemaking blends tradition and modern precision. The region’s wines are prized for their purity of fruit, minerality and capacity to evolve with cellaring.

Climate & Terroir

The climate is continental with Mediterranean influence, marked by cold winters, hot summers and the dry Mistral wind. Vineyards cling to steep, often terraced slopes with poor, well-draining soils—granite and schist in Côte-Rôtie and Cornas, varied limestone and alluvial deposits elsewhere. Aspect and elevation create strong microclimates, concentrating ripeness and minerality in the grapes.

Signature Styles

  • Single-varietal Syrah reds—powerful, peppery and ageworthy
  • Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie—structured, terroir-driven reds
  • Aromatic Viognier whites—floral, textured and concentrated
