Palmela

Region Insight

Palmela, on the Setúbal Peninsula just southeast of Lisbon, is a compact Portuguese wine region with a long viticultural history that stretches back to Roman times. Perched around the castle of Palmela and protected by the Arrábida hills, the region is best known for supple, fruit-forward reds and approachable blends that marry native varieties with international grapes. Wine styles range from structured yet ripe Castelão-led reds to lighter rosés and fresh whites. In recent decades producers have modernized cellar techniques, improving quality and allowing Palmela to assert a distinct identity within the shadow of the nearby Setúbal and Lisbon wine areas.

Vineyards occupy rolling hills and slopes of the Arrábida foothills, with soils varying from clay and sand to limestone pockets and schist in higher ground.
