Southern Rhône

Region Insight

The Southern Rhône is the warm, sun-drenched heart of Rhône Valley wine, stretching from Montélimar to Avignon and including famous appellations like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel and Lirac. Historically farmed since Roman times, the region consolidated its identity in the 20th century with AOC laws and a strong tradition of blends dominated by Grenache. Wines range from powerful, ripe red blends and age-worthy village crus to crisp, herbaceous rosés and fuller-bodied whites. Producers emphasize ripe fruit, garrigue aromatics and often generous alcohol; quality improvements over recent decades have raised the profile of both smaller domaines and established houses.

Climate & Terroir

Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and the cooling Mistral wind. Soils are highly varied: the galets roulés (pebble stones) of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, limestone and clay in the hills, and sandy or alluvial soils on the plains. Vineyards sit on low hills and plateaus as well as valley terraces, creating microclimates that influence ripeness and aromatic profile.

Signature Styles

  • Grenache-led red blends (GSM)
  • Provencal-style rosé (notably Tavel)
  • Rich, aromatic white blends
