Valais

Region Insight

Valais (Wallis) is Switzerland's largest and most varied wine region, stretched along the Rhône Valley from Martigny to Lake Geneva and framed by high Alps. Vineyards cling to steep, terraced slopes and sunny valley floors, producing wines that range from crisp, mineral-driven whites to robust, spicy reds. The region has a long viticultural history dating back to Roman times and modern fame for native varieties and alpine specialties. Low rainfall, intense sunshine and thermal amplitude give ripe fruit and clear varietal expression; producers emphasize terroir, indigenous grapes and both gastronomic and age-worthy styles.

Climate & Terroir

Valais is exceptionally sunny and dry for Switzerland, with a continental, alpine-influenced climate and strong diurnal temperature swings. Soils vary from alluvial and gravel on valley floors to limestone, schist and moraine on terraces and slopes. Many vineyards are terraced at high altitudes, creating pronounced microclimates and pronounced minerality in the wines.

Signature Styles

  • Mineral, bone-dry Chasselas (Fendant) whites
  • Aromatic, textured Petite Arvine
  • Spicy, concentrated reds from Cornalin and Syrah
