Yarra Valley

Region Insight

Yarra Valley, east of Melbourne in Victoria, is one of Australia’s most celebrated cool-climate wine regions. Established in the 19th century, it gained international recognition for refined Chardonnay and elegant Pinot Noir, and played a central role in developing Australian sparkling wine. The region blends long-established family wineries with innovative small producers, emphasizing site expression, moderate yields and careful oak use. Proximity to the city, scenic vineyards and a strong cellar-door culture have also made Yarra Valley a major enotourism destination while maintaining a reputation for age-worthy, terroir-driven wines.

Climate & Terroir

A cool, maritime-influenced climate with marked diurnal temperature variation suits slow ripening. Vineyards sit on a mix of soils—sandy loams, clay, and pockets of ancient volcanic and granite-derived soils—often on gentle to steep hillsides and valley floors. Elevation and aspect create numerous site-specific microclimates, contributing to finesse, acidity and complexity in the wines.

Signature Styles

  • Cool-climate Chardonnay
  • Pinot Noir (elegant, bright)
  • Traditional-method sparkling wines
