Attiki

Region Insight

Attiki (Attica) is the historic viticultural heartland surrounding Athens on Greece’s eastern mainland. Vine-growing here stretches back to antiquity; the region is famous for supplying wine to the city-state and for the traditional resinated style known as Retsina. Contemporary producers blend that deep history with modern winemaking, focusing on fresh, aromatic white wines that suit the region’s warm, coastal character. While large-scale vineyards of Savatiano once dominated, recent years have seen renewed interest in quality-focused bottlings and experimentation with native and international varieties. Wines from Attiki are typically approachable, bright and food-friendly, reflecting a mix of urban-adjacent vineyards, island influences and centuries of continuous wine culture.

Climate & Terroir

Attiki has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters; strong maritime influence from the Aegean moderates temperatures. Soils are varied—limestone, schist, sandy and rocky alluvial deposits—often poor and well-draining. Vineyards lie mostly at low to moderate elevations, on coastal plains and surrounding hills, which provide cooling breezes that help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness in the grapes.
