Clare Valley

Region Insight

Clare Valley, in South Australia about 100 km north of Adelaide, is one of the country’s most respected wine regions. Established in the 19th century by European settlers, it gained international fame for its concentrated, high-acid Rieslings—often lime, lemon and floral with remarkable longevity—and for robust Shiraz with dark-fruit and peppery spice. The region combines old-vine plantings, a tradition of cellar-focused winemaking and increasing interest in single-vineyard expressions. Small to medium-sized producers emphasize quality, producing both ageworthy dry whites and powerful reds that reflect distinct valley subzones and vineyard elevations.

Climate & Terroir

Clare Valley has a continental/Mediterranean-influenced climate: warm to hot days and cool nights with significant diurnal range that preserves acidity. Vineyards sit on a mix of ancient folded rock, shale and slate with red-brown loams and stony terraces. Many sites are elevated on valley rims or on river flats, planted dry or with modest irrigation; low yields and well-drained soils contribute to concentration and minerality in the wines.

Signature Styles

  • Crisp, long-lived dry Riesling
  • Full-bodied, peppery Shiraz
  • Ageworthy single-vineyard expressions
