Kras

Region Insight

Kras (Carso in Italian) is the small, stony wine region on the limestone plateau between the Adriatic and inland Slovenia, anchored around Sežana and the Karst plateau that extends to Trieste. Vineyards cling to shallow soils and rocky outcrops, producing wines with tense minerality and Mediterranean brightness. The region has an ancient viticultural past from Roman times and a continuous local tradition; after 20th‑century political changes it remains a borderland wine culture blending Slovenian and Italian practices. Producers focus on native varieties, restrained yields and terroir-driven whites and muscular, earthy reds that express the red terra rossa over limestone.

Climate & Terroir

The climate is sub-Mediterranean with warm, dry summers tempered by breezes from the Adriatic and occasional cold bora winds. Soils are shallow, Jurassic limestone and flysch with a distinctive red terra rossa topsoil in pockets; vineyards sit on plateaus, gentle slopes and rocky terraces. Drainage is excellent, water is scarce, and vines develop concentrated flavors and marked minerality tied to the karst substratum.

Signature Styles

  • Mineral, savory whites (Vitovska/Vidovska)
  • Skin-contact/amber wines from local Malvasia
  • Earthy, medium-bodied reds from Refosco/Terrano
