Lazio

Region Insight

Lazio (Latium) sits in central Italy around Rome and the Tyrrhenian coast, combining ancient wine traditions with varied local expressions. The region is best known for its crisp, aromatic whites from areas such as Frascati and Montefiascone (Est! Est!! Est!!), alongside distinctive native red varieties like Cesanese. Vineyards occupy volcanic hill belts, lake rims and coastal terraces, and winemaking ranges from simple, everyday bottlings to refined single-vineyard releases. Centuries of viticulture, papal influence and proximity to the capital have shaped both styles and market, while modern producers increasingly focus on terroir clarity and quality-driven whites and native reds.

Climate & Terroir

Lazio has a Mediterranean climate on the coast and cooler conditions inland and at elevation. Vineyards sit on volcanic soils (Colli Albani, Vulsini), tuff, clay and alluvial deposits, often on hilly slopes and crater rims. Sea breezes moderate temperatures, helping retain acidity in whites; inland sites can be warmer and more continental, favouring red varieties.

Signature Styles

  • Dry, aromatic whites (Frascati and Montefiascone style)
  • Fresh coastal and hilltop white wines with moderate alcohol
  • Medium-bodied native reds, notably Cesanese
