Marche

Region Insight

Marche, on Italy's eastern Adriatic coast, is a varied and quietly confident wine region where crisp, food-friendly whites and lively, characterful reds coexist. Historically overshadowed by nearby Tuscany and Emilia, Marche has built a reputation around Verdicchio—producing mineral-driven, citrus and almond-scented whites from Castelli di Jesi and Matelica—and distinctive regional reds such as Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. Smaller pockets like Morro d'Alba yield the aromatic Lacrima grape. Vineyards climb coastal hills and inland slopes, and producers range from family-run estates to modern wineries, blending tradition with precise winemaking to emphasize freshness, balance and terroir expression.

Climate & Terroir

Marche has a temperate, Adriatic-influenced climate with warm summers and cooling sea breezes. Vineyards sit on rolling coastal hills and higher inland sites; soils vary from calcareous marl and limestone to clay and sandy mixes. Exposure and altitude create microclimates—Matelica is cooler and more continental, while Jesi benefits from maritime moderation—supporting both crisp whites and riper red varieties.

Signature Styles

  • Verdicchio-driven dry white wines
  • Montepulciano-based regional reds (Rosso Conero, Rosso Piceno)
  • Aromatic Lacrima rosés and reds
