Pyrenees

Region Insight

The Pyrenees (Victoria, Australia) is a compact but respected wine district west of Bendigo, centered on towns such as Avoca. Vineyards planted from the late 19th century were largely replanted in the late 20th century, leading to a modern renaissance focused on quality. Producers are best known for concentrated, spice-driven Shiraz and structured Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside crisp white wines. The region combines boutique family operations and small wineries that emphasize site expression, varietal purity and balanced oak use, offering wines that age well while retaining a distinct regional identity derived from elevation and soil variety.

Climate & Terroir

Pyrenees has a continental, relatively cool climate for inland Victoria with warm days and cool nights, aided by elevation. Vineyards sit on a mix of soils including granite and basalt-derived loams and red-brown earths, often planted on ridges and slopes. This combination provides good drainage, diurnal temperature range and site variation that contribute to concentration, varietal definition and balanced acidity.

Signature Styles

  • Full-bodied, peppery Shiraz
  • Structured, fine-grained Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cool-climate aromatic whites (Riesling/Chardonnay)
