Rapsani

Region Insight

Rapsani is a small, distinctive Greek wine area on the eastern slopes of Mount Olympus in the Thessaly region. Best known for its red field blends, the appellation produces wines that combine the savory, tomato-and-tannin profile of Xinomavro with two local varieties, Krasato and Stavroto. Historically made by local growers on steep terraces, Rapsani wines are noted for their firm acidity, red-fruit and aromatic spice character, and capacity to age. In recent decades producers have combined traditional bush-trained vineyards with modern cellar techniques, yielding wines that reflect mountain freshness, rustic structure and a clear sense of place.

Climate & Terroir

Vineyards lie on steep, terraced slopes of Mount Olympus with a mountain-influenced Mediterranean climate. Elevation and exposure give cooler temperatures and marked diurnal shifts compared with lowland Greece, helping retain acidity and aromatic freshness. Soils and exact aspect vary across parcels; steep gradients and traditional bush or low-trained vines shape viticulture and contribute to the wines' structure and minerality.

Signature Styles

  • Red field-blends with tannic structure
  • Ageworthy, medium- to full-bodied red wines
  • Modern oak-aged interpretations of traditional blends
