South Africa

Region Insight

South Africa (ZA) is centred on the Western Cape, with viticulture dating to the 17th century under Dutch settlement and a modern renaissance since the 1990s. Vineyards span cool coastal sites and warmer inland valleys, producing a wide stylistic range from crisp, varietal whites to powerful, ageworthy reds. The country is best known for Chenin Blanc as the most planted white variety and the uniquely South African Pinotage, a 20th-century crossing. Quality-focused regions such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Constantia and Swartland combine old bush vines, modern cellar technology and a strong export presence, offering wines that balance ripe fruit, freshness from maritime influence and regional minerality.

Climate & Terroir

A Mediterranean climate with wet winters and dry summers is moderated by cool Atlantic and Indian Ocean breezes, especially along the coast. Soils are diverse—sandstone, shale, granite, alluvial deposits—and many vineyards occupy mountain slopes or coastal plains, giving elevation-driven diurnal range. These elements create ripe fruit flavours balanced by acidity and notable regional minerality.

Signature Styles

  • Full-bodied Cabernet and Bordeaux-style blends
