Thessaly

Region Insight

Thessaly, in central Greece, is a diverse and historically rich wine area stretching from fertile lowland plains to the foothills of Mount Olympus and Kissavos. The region combines age-old local viticultural pockets with newer plantings of international varieties. Its most famous enclave is the Rapsani zone on Olympus’s slopes, long noted for powerful, age-worthy red blends. Elsewhere, growers produce everyday dry whites and rosés for local consumption as well as more structured bottlings aimed at export. Modern investment and renewed interest in indigenous varieties and altitude viticulture have raised the profile of Thessaly’s wines while preserving traditional vineyard sites and artisanal practices.

Climate & Terroir

Thessaly displays a mix of continental and Mediterranean influences: hot, dry summers on the plains and cooler temperatures at altitude. Vineyards occupy stony, well-drained soils on steep slopes around Mount Olympus and Kissavos as well as deeper alluvial soils in the plains. Altitude and mountain breezes give diurnal range that aids acidity retention and allows more balanced ripening on hillside sites.

Signature Styles

  • Rapsani mountain red blends (structured, tannic, age-worthy)
  • Fresh, approachable lowland whites and rosés
  • Modern single-variety and international-blend reds from higher-elevation sites
