Vinos de Madrid

Region Insight

Vinos de Madrid is the Denominación de Origen surrounding Spain’s capital, comprising three subzones (Arganda, Navalcarnero and San Martín de Valdeiglesias). Vineyards sit at high altitudes on the Madrid plateau and foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, producing wines that balance ripe Mediterranean fruit with marked continental freshness. The region’s modern identity has grown since DO recognition in 1990, driven by both traditional varieties and international grapes. Producers craft everything from robust, Tempranillo-led reds and lively Garnacha rosés to fragrant local white wines, showcasing firm acidity, sun-ripened flavors and a clear sense of place tied to altitude and varied soils.

Climate & Terroir

The region has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters, and significant diurnal shifts due to elevations between roughly 500–900 metres. Soils vary from granite and clay in the Sierra foothills to alluvial and sandy deposits on the plateau. Many vineyards occupy gentle slopes, aiding drainage and sun exposure; the altitude preserves acidity and freshness in the wines.

Signature Styles

  • Tempranillo-based reds with bright fruit and firm tannins
  • Fresh, aromatic local white wines (Malvar, Albillo)
  • Garnacha rosé and youthful red expressions
