Znojmo

Region Insight

Znojmo is a historic wine district in South Moravia on the Czech-Austrian border, centered on the medieval town of Znojmo (Znaim). Vineyards cling to south- and southwest-facing slopes above the Dyje (Thaya) river, producing notably crisp, aromatic white wines and some elegant light reds. Winegrowing here stretches back to medieval times and the town’s extensive cellars and viticultural traditions remain important. Modern producers combine small family estates and cooperative structures, focusing on clean, terroir-expressive bottlings that highlight freshness, minerality and cool-climate aromatic intensity rather than high extraction or heavy oak influence.

Climate & Terroir

Znojmo has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters; significant diurnal temperature shifts preserve acidity and aromatics. Vineyards on steeper terraces and plateaus benefit from good sun exposure and the moderating influence of the Dyje river. Soils are varied: calcareous loess, loam and patches of limestone and gravel, giving wines notable minerality and structure, especially on the best south-facing slopes.

Signature Styles

  • fresh, aromatic dry white wines
  • minerally Grüner Veltliner with spice notes
  • ageworthy Riesling with citrus and petrol hints
