In Detail
Manto Negro (Mantonegro) is a red grape variety native to the island of Mallorca, Spain. It is considered the signature grape of the Balearic Islands and a key component of Mallorca's quality wine production. Primarily found in the Mallorca DO, it also thrives in the Binissalem and Pla i Llevant appellations. Manto Negro is often used in blends but also crafted into single-varietal wines. The wines are typically medium-bodied with moderate acidity and soft tannins. The aromatic profile features red fruit notes like cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, complemented by hints of Mediterranean herbs (garrigue), dried flowers, and subtle earthy undertones that can develop into leathery notes with age. Winemaking techniques influence the final style, ranging from fresh and fruity to more complex, oak-aged expressions. Manto Negro pairs well with Mediterranean cuisine, including grilled meats, roasted vegetables, tomato-based dishes, and tapas.
