In Detail
Olaszrizling (often referred to as "Italian Riesling", though unrelated to Riesling) is a white grape variety with a strong presence in Central Europe. Its origins are debated, but it has long been associated with the region. Hungary is a primary growing area, particularly around Lake Balaton, on the volcanic slopes of Somló, and in the cooler climate of Eger. Smaller plantings can also be found in Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia. Olaszrizling wines are typically medium-bodied with moderate alcohol levels and noticeable acidity. They often display aromas of green apple, pear, lemon, and white blossoms, sometimes with subtle almond or herbal notes. With age, some examples develop honeyed or waxy nuances. Styles range from crisp, unoaked wines to richer, barrel-aged versions. Olaszrizling pairs well with freshwater fish, poultry, soft cheeses, vegetable dishes, and Central European cuisine, where its acidity provides a refreshing counterpoint.
