Abruzzo

Region Insight

Abruzzo, on Italy’s central east coast between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, is a region of dramatic landscapes and resilient traditional viticulture. Long known for generous, food-friendly Montepulciano d'Abruzzo reds, the region also produces crisp whites and lively rosés. Vineyards range from coastal plains to high hillside sites, where altitude and sea breezes moderate heat and preserve acidity. In recent decades there has been a revival of native varieties and greater emphasis on quality, single-vineyard bottlings and sustainable practices. Small family estates sit alongside cooperative cellars, and appellations such as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC frame the region’s most recognized wines.

Climate & Terroir

Abruzzo combines Mediterranean coastal influences with cooler, continental mountain conditions. Soils vary from calcareous clay to sand and stony hill soils. Vineyards are planted from sea level to high slopes in the Apennines; altitude and Adriatic breezes help retain acidity and moderate summer heat. These factors favor ripe, structured reds and aromatic, crisp whites.
