Calabria

Region Insight

Calabria occupies the ‘toe’ of Italy’s boot, a compact but historically rich wine region stretching between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. Vines here date back to the Greeks and the region is best known for robust, sun-drenched red wines and a handful of distinctive local whites. Production remains largely family-based with many small estates, and the DOCs such as Cirò have helped raise its profile. Wines typically emphasize ripe fruit, savory and herbal notes, and firm tannins in reds. Recent investments in vineyard management and cellar technology have improved quality while respecting traditional grape varieties and rustic regional character.

Climate & Terroir

Calabria has a Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers and mild winters, moderated by sea breezes from both coasts. Vineyards range from coastal plains and alluvial soils to hilly sites and higher slopes of the Sila plateau. Soils are varied—clay, limestone and schistose outcrops—giving pockets of freshness and good drainage. Steep, terraced plots and exposure to coastal winds help preserve acidity and moderate heat in warmer vintages.

Signature Styles

  • Full-bodied, rustic red wines (Cirò style)
  • Fresh, aromatic white wines from indigenous varieties
  • Simple rosés and locally styled fortified/sweet wines
