Corinthia

Region Insight

Corinthia (Korinthia) lies in the northeastern Peloponnese, Greece, stretching from the coastal plains around the Gulf of Corinth into inland hills and mountains. The region is best known for the Nemea PDO within its borders, where Agiorgitiko yields deeply colored, fruit-forward red wines that range from fresh rosés to ageworthy oak-matured bottlings. Vine cultivation here combines long local traditions with modern winemaking: many estates blend indigenous varieties and employ controlled vinification and barrel aging to produce expressive, ripe-styled wines. Smaller plantings of white varieties supply easy-drinking local whites and blends for regional consumption and domestic markets.

Climate & Terroir

Corinthia has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers tempered by maritime breezes from the Gulf of Corinth. Vineyards occupy coastal plains, rolling hills and higher limestone-based slopes; soils are often calcareous with pockets of clay and schist. Elevation and aspect create cooler microclimates inland, helping preserve acidity and concentrate aromas in grapes, especially on well-drained hillside sites.
