Macedonia

Region Insight

Macedonia (Greece) is a large, historically rich wine area in northern Greece centered on subregions such as Naoussa, Amyndeon, Goumenissa and Drama. It combines ancient viticultural traditions with modern winemaking, and is best known for powerful, age-worthy Xinomavro reds alongside lesser-known indigenous varieties. Producers range from small family estates to larger cooperatives, producing everything from robust, tannic table wines to fresh aromatic whites and everyday rosés. Recent investment has improved vineyard management and oak use, helping Macedonian wines gain more presence domestically and in export markets while retaining a strong sense of local identity tied to altitude and terroir.

Climate & Terroir

Macedonia has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers; altitude and mountain ranges (Vermio, Pieria, Pindus foothills) moderate temperatures. Vineyards occupy river plains, alluvial lowlands and cooler high-altitude sites (e.g., Amyndeon, Naoussa). Soils vary from fertile alluvium to limestone, sandstone and schist, providing diverse sites that favour structured reds on slopes and fresher whites at higher elevation.

Signature Styles

  • Structured, age-worthy Xinomavro reds
  • Fresh, aromatic whites from high-altitude sites
  • Fruit-driven rosés and light sparkling wines
